Bush's War

PBS recently aired a documentary titled Bush's War; I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but find myself thinking about the title. Will this war be remembered as the Iraq war or will it be remembered as Bush's war? I don't think it is proper that a war should belong to a President, it should belong to all of us, but this President has done very little, if anything, to make the American people a part of it. The war is being paid for with borrowed money and the President has asked no one to help pay for it. Our military is stretched thin and he never asks for volunteers to help ease the burden on our brave men and women. This President has asked us to sacrifice nothing, only that we continue to shop. President Bush has been more concerned about maintaining political support for this war than he has been about making the American people a part of it.

Of course, if the President did make us a part of this war, would we support it? Would we support the war if asked to pay a war tax? Would we be willing to volunteer or have our children do the same if asked to do so? Would we support this war if there was a draft? If each one of us was asked to truly sacrifice, would we still support the war? If we can't say yes to these questions, then it is hard for us to say we support the war. It is easy to support a war when someone else is fighting and paying for it, but it becomes much harder when we are asked to give something.

I wish the President would have asked these things of us, so we could see if the war was truly justified. We could have been asked to make some sacrifice and help out. Maybe we could all help with the soldiers coming home, especially those who suffered injury. How about supporting the families of those who lost loved ones? We could have been encouraged to watch things like Last Letters Home to help understand what these people are going through. There are many things that we could have been asked to do which would have made this our war. Since these things were not asked of us, it is only appropriate that this war be remembered as Bush's war.
