Pimpin' Out Chelsea

Last week on MSNBC, in a discussion about the Presidential primaries and the use of Chelsea in the Clinton campaign, David Shuster asked the following question,"Doesn't it seem as if Chelsea is sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way?" The Clintons are outraged and appear as if they want him fired. David Shuster did issue an apology, but it doesn't seem as if this is good enough for the mighty Clintons. First let me say, I don't find the comments as horrific as described by the media or the Clintons. They certainly can be considered stupid, but as with most stupid comments everyone fails to look at intent. Did David Shuster intend to insult any of the Clintons, or did he just say something stupid that ended up insulting them?(Of course we haven't heard a peep from Chelsea, so we can't be sure if she was insulted.) I seriously doubt that this was his intention. Every time we go through this game of political correctness, there never seems to be a discussion about intent. If this was an intentional attempt to insult the Clintons, then there is justification for a firing. But if it was just a stupid comment without the intent to insult, then an apology should be fine.

As usual, when there is an insulting or offensive comment, the generation gap is overlooked. There are many words and sayings that may be offensive to those who are older, but the younger generations see things completely different. I just happened to be watching when the comments were made and they didn't even faze me. I understood what he was saying, but it is understandable that someone who is out of touch with America's youth might find these comments offensive. I am reminded of George Bush's comments about being on the google while surfing the Internets. Most of the younger people found these comments amusing, but I'm sure most of the older people thought nothing of it. Our next President must be able to unite both young and old, someone who is out of touch with America's youth will be unable to do this.

I must say, it is troubling to see that someone who expects to bring the nation together is unable to forgive. With threats of not doing debates on NBC and seeking the firing of a man who unintentionally insulted them, I feel the Clintons are being petty. In 2006, there was a tragic shooting in the Amish community. These people stepped right up and issued statements of forgiveness. What happened to Chelsea is miles away from the horrific acts that happened to the Amish children. How is it that the Amish were able to forgive the man who killed their children, yet the Clintons can't forgive a man who unintentionally offended them? I feel Hillary's reaction to this whole incident only reinforces that she is not the right person for the job. Hillary has taken what is at most a minor incident and made it all about the Clintons. I am appalled that NBC has suspended David Shuster and am inclined to boycott them. But under the inspiration of Barack Obama and his message of a nation that must be healed, I will choose to forgive them and continue to watch.
