I should be writing about considering Hillary Clinton, but it is apparent that if you are considering voting for her, it is a vote for both Hillary and Bill. The reality is that Hillary wouldn't be a candidate if she were not married to Bill. There are a handful of women who have served in the Senate twice as long as Hillary. Would any of them be considered legitimate candidates for President? I'd be willing to bet that just about all of her support comes from people who like Bill Clinton and virtually none of it from people who did not like him. I feel Hillary's candidacy would be more legitimate if she was able to gain support from people other than those who are Bill Clinton fans.
If you are hoping for Hillary to become President, take a good look at the political atmosphere we see today. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the Clintons in the last several weeks; if she were elected President it will become much worse. Even if you believe some of the controversy to be unjustified, it doesn't matter. With a Hillary Clinton Presidency the Republicans and Clinton haters will be dissecting everything they do and say. The hatred and animosity that leaves our nation divided will continue to grow and strengthen; it grew under Bill's Presidency, became worse under the Bush Presidency, and it would reach unimaginable levels under a Hillary Presidency. Regardless of who is responsible or why this is the way things are, it is an ugly truth. This will leave Hillary unable to create a united America, which is not only our greatest strength, but something we will need to overcome the challenges we face.
There is also the problem of the unreleased documents from the Clinton Presidency. If you are a loyal Democrat who just wants any Democratic candidate to become President, get ready to be hammered on this if Hillary wins the nomination. The Republicans will have a field day with it. They already have a website where you can sign a petition to have the documents released. If these records don't present a problem in the general election, they may present one if she were to be elected President. Imagine some controversial information coming out after she was elected. There would be non-stop coverage and no discussion of solving our nation's problems. The distraction would leave Hillary unable to effectively govern. I feel as long as these documents remain unreleased that it tarnishes the legitimacy of her campaign.
I've heard some of the Clinton supporters talk of how wonderful things were in the 1990's. But were things really that great or have things been so bad under Bush that they appear that way? I was laid off from a small business in 1993 and my wife was laid off from a Canadian company that closed its doors shortly after NAFTA. People talk about the large number of jobs that were created during the Clinton years, but never about what kind of jobs were actually created. Wal-Mart created tons of low-paying jobs in the 1990's, while many good paying jobs continued to leave the country. Like most Presidents, the statistics are cherry picked to create the illusion that things were going well. Besides, even if you believe Bill Clinton was a great President, it wasn't great enough to overcome today's problems. I don't believe Bill or Hillary have enough to lead this country in the direction it needs to go.
In a country that seems to be making many decisions based on emotion, I am concerned about the amount of Hillary's support that is purely emotional. After the effects of the near tear event you have to wonder about the large percentage of the female vote. I would love to see our first woman President. But the question must be asked, is this the right woman? I would rather see our first woman President be someone who made it to this level on their own merit, not someone who arrived on somebody else's coattail. Even those who like Bill Clinton need to be wary of making the emotional choice. Like the radio stations that play music from time gone by, we tune in because of the memories it brings back. The problem is that if we don't change the station we may miss the opportunity to create better memories. If you believe that Hillary can overcome the hatred and animosity that prevents our country from coming together and will be able to lead our nation in the right direction amidst a storm of controversy, then go ahead and vote for her. Just be sure to give proper consideration and avoid the emotional choice.
