Solving the Health Care Crisis

Hillary Clinton has unveiled her solution to the health care crisis. Like all the other politician's plans, it amounts to nothing more than problem management. Everybody talks about making health insurance more affordable from a cost standpoint, but nobody talks about making it affordable from an income standpoint. Health care costs are definitely out of control in America, but part of the reason it is hard to afford is because people and businesses aren't earning enough money. If we can raise the income of those who can't afford health insurance and at the same time reduce costs we have a much better chance of solving this problem. Even if the health care industry was made non-profit there would still be many businesses and millions of people unable to afford it.

As long as this is the case the financial burden will fall on our government. Part of solving this health care crisis must include reducing the cost to government, or more appropriately put, reduce the cost to the taxpayer. If my health care costs go down but my taxes go up, what am I really gaining? I pay quite a bit for my family's health care, which is a tremendous burden, but this burden could be reduced or eliminated with a substantial increase in income.

One thing I am sure of is that government run health care is not a solution to this crisis. We need to look no further than our education system; our government has done a lousy job with it and I would expect the same if they ran the health care system. Universal health care may sound nice but it is one more step towards complete dependency on government. We should be demanding ways for our government to make us less dependent on them. Solving the health care crisis is going to take vision and imagination. This is what we must look for as we head to the polls in 2008.
